Make the first hightlighting color "None"
In the highlighting color box, make the first choice "none". (Top left) Sometime getting the text back to white/none requires going to the bottom right corner which depending on screen and placement is sometimes difficultly.

planbookedu...the problem with your solution above is, when you click on the eraser to clear the highlighted color you also delete other formatting such as bold. Simple solution. Change highlight default from the ugly color of gray to yellow.
planbookedu...your solution is time consuming. The problem is the default color is gray! Who wants gray? Everyone uses yellow mostly. How about converting the default to yellow rather than gray?

I agree. I can't find how to change the highlighting back to none. If you have a colored background, selecting the white option will highlight white. How do you change highlighting to none on a colored background? I have been trying to highlight by matching the background color but this doesn't always work.
